I was growing up in the South Jamaica section of Queens , in New York city, everyone in our neighborhood came from somewhere else. This country didn’t exclude them, saying “We can’t afford you, you might take someone’s job”.

Today, at a time when bias-related violence (ici violence raciale) , some of it directed at immigrants, has more than doubled in eight years, the revival of anti-immigrant sentiment would be sad, and unwise, because immigration, the history of America, has been the source of all our strength .And it continues to make us stronger. {….}

It’s notable that 20% of the immigrants in New York City’s workforce are in white-collar and professional positions.(…)In fact, our newest newcomers have saved several key industries in New York- like garment manufacturing, which would have left the city had immigrants not provided a new source of labour.

Different as they may be from my parents’generation, today’s new Americans still bring with them the same old-fashioned family values : discipline, a sense of responsibility, an eagerness to work – to achieve, healthy, stimulating ambition, the willingness to sacrifice for the next generation and a faith in something larger than themselves.

This fresh new infusion of energy, enterprise should ne welcomed, not shunned. Earlier immigrants built a nation; the new immigrants can help us save it.
